Views from a car window, or 'all legs and hair'

Is it strange to be concerned about someone that you don't know, and will probably never come into contact with?

Why?
Well, let me explain.

I don't know about you, but I normally take the same route to and from work every day.
Since I work full time, that means that five days a week, at approximately the same time each day, I'm doing the same thing, in the same place as all the other people who are also living their lives as prompted by their personal timetables.

So I often see the same things over and over again. Points during my journey where I glance over and check out the view.

Like the brow of a small hill, just outside of Seal, where the traffic flow can slow and jam as the road narrows at the bottom just before a blind corner and an informal crossroads.

When it does, and I'm stuck waiting for the cars to chug slowly on, I glance to my right, and see how the field is looking.

This was what I saw in November 2005

And this was in December that same year.....

Its much the same today.

( ok, I fess up, I took this photo AFTER I wrote the blog, but hey ho, such is life )

The fence posts have been replaced, but are still rough hewn, irregular lines of grey, wobbling up and down as I drive past.
The shrubs have been cut down and regrown.
Sometimes there are sheep nibbling their way down to the valley.
Or a tractor.
Once there was a helicopter, black sleek and slightly sinister, just sitting, silent and solitary, on the grass.
Perhaps, next time I'm stuck in a total jam, I'll take another photo to compare....

I see people too.
Generally though, I'm not aware of seeing the SAME people.
Except for one.

For at least the past year, almost every Saturday, I have driven past the same person, walking the 3ish miles along the A25.

The first thing I think I noticed was her hair.
Being of the short, tousled (aka scruffy) titian variety myself, her long blond mane caught my eye as I drove past.
But it might just as likely been the oversized jacket she was wearing.
Which brought to mind the very comfy, completely ugly, massive denim jacket that I used to own during one of my pregnancies, that I have to shamefacedly own up to wearing rather a lot AFTER said pregnancy when i was going through one of my 'why-do-I-care-what-I-look-like-when-I-have-baby-sick-on-my-shoulder' phases.

The juxtaposition of an impression of tall, slender, manicured, blondness and ginormous tatty lumberjack jacket made an impact.

When I saw her walking in almost the same place the following saturday, I did a more active recce.
Same hair, same jacket, same impression of height and slenderness....um, rather extreme slenderness in fact, but that might just have been the black tights and big jacket.
I mean, thats almost certain to make your joints look a little, well, knobbly....
Isn't it?
My dad used to describe one of my tall, slim, school-friends as being "all legs and teeth, like a colt just learning to walk" when I was having a teenage low esteem session, and wishing for the inches that she had, rather than the curves that were prominently mine!
That was almost the impression I got.
All legs and hair! and Jacket, it's impossible to ignore the jacket.

Its a longish walk, but when I think back to the distance I used to cover getting to school in london - through a park, down a couple of long roads, past the railway station and the town hall, then down the length of the high street, it wasn't really any different from that.
A bit of a solitary walk though. The pavement is bounded by woods on either side, with very few other walkers, but lots of traffic whizzing past.

So I have been looking out for her as I drive to work on Saturdays.

Partly to do that thing we all do, of imagining the lives of people we notice, making up story-boards in our heads...
Is she a stable hand, or training for some endurance event?

But I have to admit, that as the months have gone on, and those slender-to-start-with legs seem to have reduced in thickness even further, while the jacket has grown ever bigger, I check to make sure that I don't see a pile of cloth in a heap by the edge of the woods.

I was later than usual driving to work today.
For once I had an admin day, and  didn't need to set up the practice before the patients started arriving. So although I was at work before 9.00am, it was about 15 minutes later than normal.
I was at the bottleneck in Seal when I drove past her.
Instead of the width of at least a carriageway and a half, plus constant cars and vans blocking my view, there was about 15ft.
She was wearing the jacket, the black tights and had her hair sleek and straightened, falling to her waist.
And she stumbled as she walked.
:(

One of my daughters ( the one who had inhabited my version of the jacket with me ) used to figure skate, and at the rink there were a number of extremely slender but completely fit and healthy girls.
One of them was also tall, blond, and so slim that when she spun on the ice, her waist in side profile appeared about 6 inches wide. Some people used to worry that she was unnaturally slim.
She wasn't, she just came from a family of tall slender people, and ate well. She had to eat well so that she had the energy to skate at the competitive level that she did! But she worried that she would always be, in her view, straight and skinny.
As she grew up, her curves appeared, and she's now a tall, slender, shapely woman. So is her mum.
Sadly for my daughters, their genetics mean they have inherited my lack of height and tendency to dodgy knees, but we'll skip over that.

I wish that my story board for the blonde jacket girl had an uplifting ending.
...and the crowd cheered as she lifted the trophy.
or,
....the owner told her that she was being given a raise in recognition of the hard work she had put in at the stables.

But that stumble gave me pause.
And I wondered if she would be walking that road next week.

I havent laughed so much since...

Occasionally I hear about something and, although I fully intend to go and look as soon as I have access to my laptop, I dont actually get around to looking at it.
Well today I actually followed up one of those random thoughts and logged on to the BBC pages to look at the Sporting Challenges that have been going on between Chris Evans and Johnny...erm...I cant remember his surname.
Oh yes I can - it's Saunders.
[ having a senior moment there]

I'd heard the follow up days after the skateboarding challenge and thought that surely it couldnt be THAT bad?
Well, yes it could!

After I wiped away the tears [ of laughter mixed with a load of empathic ouches ] I went looking through the other footage.

Now I really like figure skating, as I've said in the past, so when I saw this video I had to watch it.

And if i thought the skateboarding was funny.............

Ah, dear, its taken me 5 minutes just to stop giggling :D

As a last thought though, well done to both of them for tackling all those sports.
I couldn't have done half as well as they have.

And if you want to see the rest [ i can recommend the gymnastics video if you're in need of cheering up ] then go to the radio 2 sporting challenge page and have a look.
It'll be time well spent.

pain in the neck

Now I bet you thought that I was going to have a moan about someone/something here .
didn't you?
Come on, you can admit it.
I'm quite aware that I can be a moany grumpy old bag rather more often than I'd like.

Well for once you're wrong.
My neck actually hurts.
Like hell actually.
A hot pain running from my collar-bone to my ear.

It doesn't bode well for my having to lug my nearly exploding suitcase around french railway stations.

The trouble is i'm having to take far more than i'd like .
Well, maybe not, but although i can launder small stuff , I can't see me washing jumpers, and if theres one thing that turns me right off its smelly people, so I'm certainly not going to join there ranks for the sake of packing an extra bit of clothing [ or 2, or even 3...OK, so I've got too much in there, stop nagging! ]

I blame it firmly on the 2 rather large cuddly toys that I've got stashed in there though.

Why am i taking them?
Do I have some weird fetish involving stuffed animals?
Do I have problems sleeping at night?

No actually.

You see there are certain traditions in Ice Skating competitions, and one of them is that at the end of a skaters performance you throw stuff on the ice for them, and cute little girls skate round, gather them up and dump them on to the compeditor while they're sitting nervously waiting for the scored to show.
It gives them something to wave at the tv crews who are sticking their lenses up their noses as they wait for the tears or stomping off or even the victory grin.

So I ordered 2 small squashy toys.
A bulldog with a union jack waistcoat, and a grey teddy with 2 union jacks embroidered on his tum.
The only problem was that when they came instead of being about 4 or 5 inches tall, they were 10 or 11.
*eek*
So as I type this they are tightly bound in bags and squished on top of my thermals.

Its possible I wont need to bring them home with me, but I can see that Johns mum might ask me to stick them back in my suitcase till we get home given the amount of space they take up.

I also have my fleece lined union jack wooly hat complete with heidi style plaits and bobble on the top.

Oi....................................................stop laughing.

:D
:D
:D

I know, ok.......
But there aren't likely to be many of us there, so its important to show support.

So, if by any chance you see some red haired , red white and blue flag emblazoned mad-hatted loony engulfed in a massive coat with so much fur round the hood that I cant see where I'm going, then its not me, right.

Counting down

TEN DAYS TO GO!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

OK, so I can hear all you lot out thare wondering what I'm going on about...

Well, i lie actually.
what I can hear is the rapid pressing of the next blog button as you decide theres nothing here for you.

Well, hold on just a minute, you instant-judgement-making- tappy-fingered-people.
What I'm referring to, with tones of awe and reverence in my voice, is the 2006 European figure Skating championships.

You know, that thing thats in my links over there ----------->

Erm, well, it might be more

So sue me for not knowing how far down the page i put it.
Just go look .
And be awed by all that fit, lycra encased, slippy-slidyness of talent.

*slaps the rude kids round the head*

No, thats Not what I meant!
:D

Actually I have an admission to make .
I've just had to text my friends to find out where we're staying and which day we're travelling on.
*hangs head in shameful exasperation at my own crap planning*
See, it's not my fault.
They say "Do you want to go?"
I say "Bloody-Hell-Yes-try-and-stop-me-if-you-can-where-did-I-pack-my-woolly-hat
-and-thermal-vests-do-i-need-to-pack-the-chocolates-stupid-question-of-course-i-do
-no-i-won't-forget-to-bring-the-tickets-but-just-incase-maybe-you-should-hang-on
-to-them-for-me....."
[ at this point they all jump on me and make me calm down]
and then my bit is all done.
I just turn up and we go.

Well, we go and I generally get stopped at customs and my bag searched.
Or I get stuck in the ticket machine.

Don't laugh!..I DO, and its not nice*sniff*
Last time the Eurostar machine rejected every one of my tickets, but I got the better of the Metro and managed not to get stuck inbetween the doors once!

The thing is, Lyon is an unknown for me, and i have no idea what strange stroppy bits of machinery are waiting to gang up on me so that my friends end up wetting themselves as i try and get through jammed turnstiles, recalcitrant slising doors and any number of otherwise innocuous barriers.

I think i should pack some WD40 just incase......

YES!!!!!

John has retained hs title and is the British Mens Figure Skating Champion for 2006.
Woooooooooooooooooo
:D :D :D

I wish I could have been there to see him skate, but time and cash just didn't allow it.
Still, at least I'll get to watch him do his stuff in January when I go to the Europeans.

I'm completely chuffed for him.

What A week!!!!!!

Where on earth do i start ?

Should i go in strict time order moving from silly games on the eurostar with a load of unknown guys who's knowledge of 50's and 60's pop was far superior to mine, through a foot aching but green eyeball envy inducing visit to the Musee D'Orsay, a wet-yourself gigglefest during re-surfacing at the Bercy Ice rink [ its amazing how funny spongebob square pants and an hour long session in the bathroom becomes under the right circumstances] to the amazing chocolatier on the Boulevard St Michel with the mohican and handlebar moustache who dances and sang his way around selecting chocolates for my girls.

Or should it be by incidence of gradually increasing madness of my partners in crime, ending up with a face off in the Metro turnstiles betweed a rabidly tiny fur clad french Madame intent on inserting herself in front of an equally rabid and tiny fur clad english Madam shouting 'come on girls, link hands, dont let the french through' or earlier 'Oh No, They've taken my daughter, You'll have to body surf back to us dear' [ as the swell of bodies briefly separated them ] plus the amazing sight of a 46 year old woman jumping up and down while screaming at an exasperated assistant 'we don't need to be seated , we were here an hour ago' while the rest of us were legging it down the stairs to get seated because they had started the skating early?

Or maybe I should just stick to the skating....
Mao Asada, a 15 year old from Japan who wiped the floor with the opposition, looking like she could skate forever, as light as a butterfly, going from triple to triple, sticking in a triple, double double combination without breathing hard. Absolutely amazing.
:D
The Kerrs dropping out.
The dance seeming to go from lift to lift with very little of 'dance' between...more show numbers than anything else.
3 days of skating ranging from the indiferent to the gobsmacking, but I wouldn't have missed a second of any of it.

There was loads more, but its all merging together already.

Except Mao Asada..... if you get the chance to watch her skate, take it.
You won't be disappointed.
